Texas Bird Project | Frank X Tolbert 2
August 4 - October 7, 2017
Frank X Tolbert 2 has a magical way of interpreting the world with line and color. For the past three years he has explored the birds of Texas in paintings, etchings, and drawings. In the process Tolbert’s birds have been transformed through his work into darkly familiar personalities. Flatbed is excited to show the large scale paintings, prints, and drawings that have emerged from his ornithological sojourn. Expect the unexpected for these are no ordinary birds. Tolbert’s Texas Birds fly artistic boundaries.
"My work is largely narrative. I see it as an autobiographical documentation of my life, a sort of visual diary where the folklore of Texas and my personal life are inserarably intertwined. Stylistically I use a heavy emphasis on line to reconstruct fantasies, legends, dreams, realities, travels, the supernatural, the violent, the beautiful, and the ugly.
I have lived all of my life in Texas, traveling around the state and in Mexico. My life and work incorporate elements from the cultures of Texas and Mexico ... sort of a combination of Otis Dozier's Wild West heroismd and Rufino Tamayo's magical realism of Mexico." - Frank X Tolbert 2
