OPENING RECEPTION - APRIL 28, 2007 6-8PM
ARTIST TALK - JUNE 6, 2007 AT 7 PM

CONNER, WHO LIVES AND WORKS IN WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA, HAS BEEN MAKING COLOR WOODCUTS AT FLATBED FOR MANY YEARS. THIS EXHIBITION FEATURES HER NEW WESTWOOD SUITE, A SET OF EIGHT VERY LARGE (50 X 38 INCHES), VERY COLORFUL WOODCUTS. IN EACH ONE, THE ARTIST UTILIZES THE WOOD GRAIN AS HER INTENSELY-COLORED BACKGROUND, WHICH ACTS A FOIL FOR HER IMAGERY, WHICH IS DERIVED FROM A SPIROGRAPH AND A COMPASS. THE RESULT IS A HERALDIC ICON THAT IS FLAG-LIKE IN SHAPE AND SCALE AND ASIAN IN SPIRIT. THE EXHIBITION WILL ALSO INCLUDE SOME SMALLER WORKS, WHICH INCORPORATE IMAGERY FROM SIMILARLY SURPRISING SOURCES.
