RUSSEL LEE PHOTOGRAPHS

MARCH 29 - MAY 31, 2007

THE CENTER FOR AMERICAN HISTORY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN HAS ORGANIZED AN EXHIBITION AT FLATBED OF FORTY OF RUSSELL LEE'S BLACK-AND-WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS. THIS IS A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE WORK OF THIS LEGENDARY WPA PHOTOGRAPHER. AFTER HIS WORK IN THE 1930S, LEE CONTINUED TO MAKE DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE U. S. AND ABROAD. THIS EXHIBITION INCLUDES MANY OF HIS CLASSIC IMAGES, AS WELL AS MANY THAT HAVE NOT BEEN EXHIBITED PREVIOUSLY. LEE FOUNDED THE PHOTOGRAPHY CURRICULUM IN THE UT ART DEPARTMENT AND TAUGHT THERE UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT. THIS YEAR, UT PRESS PUBLISHED A HANDSOME MONOGRAPH OF LEE'S WORK.
