"The Healer," Annalise Gratovich's newest woodcut from Villager's Carrying Things from Home
Flatbed is excited to announce the publication of The Healer, Annalise Gratovich’s newest woodcut in her series “Villagers Carrying Things from Home.” This woodcut was created in the unique method of adding color by printing hand-dyed chine collé elements into the life-sized woodcut, and is the seventh Villager woodcut in her planned series of eight. Only seven impressions were printed in the edition.
“The Villagers Carrying Things From Home explores themes of displacement, self- and cultural identity, intention and accountability, as well as burden and regret. Each figure in the series is a totemic being who serves an individual purpose: The Mariner, The Hunter, The Builder, The Musician, The Mother, The Undertaker, The Healer, and The Fool. The figures are based on matryoshka dolls (Russian stacking dolls) and the textile patterns are derived from Ukrainian embroidery, either in patterning or stylistic outline. This nod to the traditional and folk arts of the lands of my heritage, Ukraine and Texas, is used to invoke feelings of nostalgia and memories or fantasies of faraway places which are lost or cannot be returned to.” Annalise Gratovich, 2017
The Healer is now available for purchase and can be seen and purchased at Flatbed or through our online store. It will be featured in the upcoming 2023 Editions show at Flatbed and the Affordable Art Fair in Austin during May.
